Devil May Care

The Hays Code had placed a damper on raucous, racy Hollywood. No longer tolerated was the idea that sinning could be fun. But boundaries are made to push.

And Madra Lord was just the one to do it.

"When's she full of the devil-there's 'heck' to pay!" trumpeted the posters for Devil May Care, one of Madra's first color films.

A color film-or an OFF-color film? That's what breathless audiences waited in darkened theatres to discover. So when Madra posed against the doorframe of her boudoir, dressed in a sizzling red peignoir set, and raised her eyebrows provocatively at the lounge lizard sitting on the parlor settee, fans gripped the arms of their seats (or their dates).

"Mercy, look at the hour!" she purred. "It's much too late for you to head for home now, isn't it, lover boy?"

"I'd fear for my very life out there," he replied, as a smile twitched around his lips.

"Well, I'm sure you'll want to take a quick bath before retiring," she cooed.

The tension in the theatre mounted...

"I'd like that," he answered in a husky voice.

"Then be sure you wipe the tub out well-because that's where you're sleeping tonight!" She threw him a pillow. "Now be a good boy and go away-I need my beauty sleep." And with a toss of her head, she strapped on her sleep mask and tightly bolted her door.

Audiences laughed in delight.

And the Hays Code was preserved once more.
