First Stop: Chicago

The train was slowing to a halt. “Can this be Hollywood already,” thought Gene, waking from a dream of palm trees and sunshine--but when she looked out of the train window, she saw Chicago, with its skyscrapers and elevated trains by Lake Michigan instead.

A whirlwind tour of the Windy City’s best stores found Gene a little breathless. This was the first time she had been dressed by the studio--and the whirl of the stores’ revolving doors was only matched by the joyful spinning of her head as outfit after outfit was paraded before her. Finally, she was beautifully dressed in the latest fashion--a fur-trimmed suit in blue that she would wear to make her radio debut on gossip columnist Cora Harper’s “Non-Stop Hollywood” show.

The APPLAUSE sign glowed as Cora took the microphone. “My dears,” she intoned, “Monolithic Studios’--and my--latest discovery, Miss Gene Marshall, the young lady you’ve heard so much about, is in our fair city between trains on her way to Tinsel Town. Perhaps with a little encouragement, she’ll honor us with a song...?”

The polite applause Cora had requested propelled a just-a-little-bit-more-than-nervous Gene toward the microphone. But after she finished a sweet and warm arrangement of “Blue Skies,” no APPLAUSE sign was needed to prompt the ovation she received!

So long, Chicago--it’s been fun. But next stop: HOLLYWOOD!
