Right in Step

In the musical extravaganza She’d Rather Dance, Gene plays the irreverent scion of one of Boston’s oldest and most influential families. Much to her family’s chagrin, Gene follows her heart and accepts a Broadway producer’s offer to star in his latest hit, knowing she risks her inheritance and social standing (and the New York critics!).

The climax of the film featured a big dance number at a party on stage the night before the show’s Boston preview. In it, the girls and boys of the chorus, tense and eager for an audience, explode with a satiric song called “Who Gives Beans About Boston?” Singing and dancing along the backstage corridors, they descend on Gene’s dressing room and drag her into the hall to dance. Spinning and twirling in a stunning blue gown, she enthusiastically matches them step for step, singing along: “Who gives beans about Boston?/We don’t it’s true...!”

Laughing, the chorus kids escort her back to her dressing room, singing their brassy anthem all the way. But as she closes the door behind her, her mood changes. After all, Boston is her home—and how this show is accepted by the audience pales in comparison to her hopes for her family’s approval. Sad and alone, she starts changing out of her costume, singing one more chorus—that ends with “Who gives beans about Boston?/I do, that’s who...” A solitary tear rolls down her cheeks as she turns her head away. And the scene fades to black.
